Cloister stated the possible questions that will arise in the story of A Time to Kill. And it was answered very well.
1. What if Carl Lee did not hire Jake back as his lawyer, would he be acquitted? • First and foremost it was very stupid of Carl Lee when he fired Jake as his lawyer. But I think anyone who is offered of the same offer as Carl Lee received would also do the same just like what he did. He was stunned by his friend’s offer. On the other hand, if Carl Lee did not hire Jake back, his soul will absolutely be burning in hell. He fired Jack in exchange of Bo Marsharfsky who is not licensed to practice law in Mississippi, who doesn’t care about him because all is wants is the publicity the he would be getting if he represent Carl Lee in court. Moreover, Bo Marsharfsky is well-known for being the lawyer of the thieves, pimps, corrupt politicians and the like. Name the devil’s imps and he represented them all. It would be hard for Bo to represent Carl Lee and tell the entire Mississippi that he is innocent because of his reputation. He will surely, precisely, absolutely rot in hell.
2. How important is the transfer of the trial venue in Carl Lee’s case?
• The transfer of the trial venue in Carl Lee’s case is very important. Carl Lee had been prejudged already by the people in their place. This would influence the jury’s decision and Jake Brigance would not allow it to happen.
3. What do you think would happen if Carl Lee was convicted?
• That day when the court will decide whether Carl Lee is guilty or not guilty, thousands of black people flocked outside the trial venue to support Carl Lee. The courtroom was jam-packed like there was a superstar ready to perform. Everyone has sympathized Carl Lee and think that if the same thing would happen to their daughters they would also do the same. If Carl Lee was convicted, I think there would be stampede, riot, and a violent reaction from the people who are supporting Carl Lee from the very start.
Character Captain
Carl Lee Hailey is: A Good Father; protector of his family; willing to do anything for family “The janitor’s closet burst open and Mr. Carl Lee Hailey sprung from the darkness with an M-16. At point-blank raged open fire. The loud, rapid, clapping, popping gunfire shook the courthouse and exploded the silence. The rapists froze, then screamed as they were hit-Cobb first, in the stomach and chest, then Willard in the face, neck and throat. They twisted vainly up the stairs, handcuffed and helpless, stumbling over each other as their skin and blood splashed together”. Chapter 7, Page 72
Jake Brigance is: A competitive, smart lawyer Carl Lee was acquitted because of him. He also find way just to get the Carl Lee case back from the Bo Marsharfsky. - “Who sent for me?” he demanded. “I did,” answered Carl Lee. “Well what do you want?” “I wanna give you my case back.” You assume I want it back?” “What Lester sat up and looked at Jake. “It’s not a gift you give or take away. It’s an agreement between you and your attorney. Don’t act as though you’re doing me a greet favor.” Jake’s voice was rising, his anger apparent. “Do you want the case?” asked Carl Lee. “Are you trying to rehire me, Carl Lee?” “Cause Lester wants to.” Fine, then I don’t want your case.” Jake stood and started for the door. “If Lester wants me and you want Marsharfsky then stick to with Marsharfsky. If you can’t think of youself you need Marsharfsky. “ . . . “Explain why you want me to handle your case?” . . . “All I can do is trust people, trust Lester, and I trust you, Jake”.
Literary Luminary
I personally chose the following passages because these are the highlight of the story. These are also the passages that moved me, made me cry, made me feel the pain that the characters are going through, and these are the passages that made me smile.
“She was ten, and small for her ages. She lay on her elbows, which were stuck and bound together with yellow nylon rope. Her legs were spread grotesquely with the right leaning post of a long-neglected fence. The ski rope had cut into her ankles and the blood ran down her legs. Her face was bloody and swollen, with one eye bulging and closed and the other eye half open so she could see the other white man sitting on the truck. She did not look at the man on top of her. He was breathing hard and sweating and cursing. He was hurting her”. Chapter 1, Page 2 • This was for me the very highlight of the story – the rape part. Rape for me is one of the most demonic acts. I just can’t imagine how painful it is (mentally, physically, and emotionally) for the child. At such a young age, she should’ve not experienced this kind of horrible act. She’s innocent and the future holds so much for her but these bastards wreck her entire being. “When she awoke one of the men was lying under the tailgate, the other under the tree. They were asleep. Her arms and legs were numb. The blood and beer and urine had mixed with the dirt underneath her to form a sticky paste that glued her small body to the ground and crackled when she moved and wiggled . . . She watch him as he walked around the tree on her right side, and she stared at him as he stared between her legs. When he lowered his pants she turned to the left and closed her eyes. He was hurting her again . . . When she awoke the second time they were up and moving around. The tall one staggered to her with a small knife. He grabbed her left ankle and sawed furiously on the rope until it gave away”. Chapter 1, Page 3 • While reading this part of the story I felt numb. It was like you’re feeling the pain that she felt when these bastards were hurting her. You can’t just imagine what kind of people they are. They deserved to be slaughtered. “The janitor’s closet burst open and Mr. Chapter 7, Page 72 • Given the situation like Carl Lee have, I think I would do the same just like what he did or I might do something more than Carl Lee have done. It was her little angel who was raped, not just raped but beaten up and they even urinated in her face. “Around midnight, Willie took off his boots and relaxed on the couch. He removed his holster and placed the gun on the floor. He was almost asleep when he heard the scream. It was the horrible, high-pitched cry of a child being tortured. He grabbed his gun and ran to the bedroom. Tonya was sitting on the bed, facing the window, waiting for her. Gwen hugged her”. Chapter 23, Page 255 • I just can’t imagine the trauma that Tonya is experiencing during those days. I mean she just a little innocent girl who don’t deserve to be like this. Some rape victims who are of right age may sometimes suicide because they can’t bear the pain and shame. How much more Tonya? She’s just ten years old, innocent and fragile. She will bring this pain forever, the experience that wrecked her. “As to each count of the indictment, we the jury find the defendant not guilty by reason of insanity.” Chapter 43, Page 508 • In here you can feel the victory, the triumph. Despite everything that they’ve been through, the death threats, the long movie like court trials full of surprises and explosions and sometimes lies. But all the hard work and sleepless nights paid off when the court secretary announces Carl Lee “not guilty”.

I don’t often hear or seen this kind of criminal offence on t.v or radio but this serves as a wake call for everybody to watch their children and always think of their welfare. I can this story to a true to life event that I’ve watch on t.v somewhere here in the Philippines, where just like the events in the story, thee was also a killing inside the court house. The same with Carl Lee Hailey who took justice in his own hands, that man also took justice in his own hands. He also even shot the judge.

Reflection
For this last novel that we have read I am grateful and I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my friend Cloister Kevin Saldivia for such an immeasurable care for the group. He is one of the people whom I know that will never left you behind. I am blessed that despite of so much things to do we were able to pass this on time.
